Columnist Robert J. Samuelson has made the Wall of Shame here before, so I’m glad to confer Wall of Fame status today. I must admit it’s not richly deserved, but this is a start:
I’ve heard a lot of talk about “economic growth” this morning on a cable news network. Politicians want to keep historically high levels of immigration into the U.S. in order to grow the economy. The folly of that line of reasoning is subject for another day, but the folly of our obsession with economic growth gets its turn now.
The long reach of the mega-capitalist Koch brothers makes the Wall of Shame today. One of their mouthpieces, Walter E. Williams, shares the shame with his May 31 column:
I was prepared to slap this story onto the Wall of Shame when I saw the headline. After all, it’s just another worry piece about a “birth dearth” in a nation that actually doesn’t know how lucky it is.
New York Times headline writers and reporter Chris Buckley have kindly provided this week’s textbook example of subtle word choices that keep the quest for population growth alive.
